Read more on how Mayan resorts timeshares creates "perfect" atmospheres to lure prospects into unnecessary timeshare purchases and become mayan palace timeshare scam victims.
Mayan Palace is a resort brand owned and operated by Grupo Vidanta, a Mexican development company in the 1970s. Grupo Vidanta has evolved into one of Mexico's leading developers of tourism infrastructure—including Mexico's first privately built and owned international airport at Puerto Peñasco. These resorts boast spacious accommodations, world-class restaurants, golf and tennis facilities, a high level of services and amenities, children's programs, and themed events.
Mayan Palace sales tactics are aggressive, and representatives will tell you anything you want to hear to get you to sign a contract—and keep you locked into it. It is all too common for sales representatives to offer existing owners an "upgrade" to a more expensive membership, promising benefits that never materialize.
Among the most egregious Mayan Palace timeshare scams committed by sales representatives:
- Concealing the cooling-off period. Representatives frequently fail to inform buyers that Mexican law grants a 5-day cooling-off period during which they can cancel the contract without penalty. Instead, they repeatedly tell buyers that once the contract is signed, there is no cancellation period whatsoever.
- The "trade-in" deception. Sales representatives offer a trade-in, leading buyers to believe that Mayan Palace will take their existing timeshare, sell it on their behalf, and deduct the proceeds from the cost of their new Mayan Palace membership. In reality, the buyer ends up owning two timeshares, with payments due on both—turning it into a double Mayan Palace timeshare scam.
- False promises about travel benefits. The sales pitch will explain all the wonderful places you can visit with your timeshare, and how exclusive and prestigious it is to own a Mayan Palace membership. What they fail to explain is how the timeshare actually works, what the real possibilities are of traveling to those destinations, and what type of unit you are actually purchasing—which is often not the same unit shown during the tour. They also promise discounts on airfares and certificates for cruises, both of which are false.
Dealing with Mayan Palace after purchasing a timeshare can be frustrating. Customer service rarely provides the answers you expect when it comes to using your timeshare or booking your next vacation. You are lucky if you are able to book anything at all.
Before You Purchase: A Word of Caution
Before you purchase any timeshare, you need to think carefully about how you will use it in your life, and whether you truly have the money to spend. Take your time and do not make any commitments on your first visit. Do an internet search on the company—if the company is legitimate, they will let you come back another day if you wish to make the purchase.
Thousands of people every year fall victim to fraudulent timeshare sales practices while vacationing in Mexico. The sales teams have carefully crafted and proven techniques to close sales, and they are very skilled at ensuring that potential clients become timeshare owners.

Do not feel ashamed of your purchase. Instead, take action to prevent others from financial ruin and to resolve your own situation.

Timeshare Resale Companies Over Promise and under Deliver

I was stopped in the airport by Jose who claimed I was visiting Vidante to give my opinion of the new resort. In return, I purchased discounted excursions and was promised breakfast. I had never been to a timeshare presentation so I was completely caught of guard. I was onsite for over 6 hours and was harassed even after I said I wa not interested several times. After about 5 ppl and 15 no's, we almost signed a contract. (Thank god for the lock our credit union put on our card). Our down payment went from 8715 to 400...strange right. When we finally were "freed", we were given 180 pesos for a taxi ride that costs 250 pesos. We had to find our own way to the taxi stand, and beg someone to help find a taxi.
After reading these, I am so glad we didn't fall for this!
I was scammed too by those cloaks , my first mistake was when i went to the timeshare presentation , once there you get exposed to a high pressure , so at the end i accepted and i sign , Big mistake ever..actually im looking for the cancellation i cant afford paying the high maintenace fees anymore.
in my case i was aborded by some salespersons they forced me to go to a timeshare presentation , at the end i went , so i cant understand why these people are so insistent ? at that moment i said many times NO to the timeshare presentation contract , so they get angry and told me to leave the room, what with that jerks?
i bought with them and then I try to donate the timeshare , I wanted to donate because I could no longer afford it, plus I had many problems with it, the people who sold me sold me under false pretenses, I feel actually scammed, be very careful if you purchase a timeshare and then want to donate, is a very complicated paperwork.
A friends of mine had fallen on this trap they were scammed , they still have problems with them , such a shame really
