Timeshare scams in Mexico increase every year. Before buying a timeshare in this country, know the frauds that are being committed there

Vacationing in Mexico can be a great experience, but this experience can become terrible if you are not aware of the timeshare scams that are being committed in this beautiful country.

Timeshare scams in Mexico are the order of the day every year, according to PROFECO (Mexico’s Consumer Protection Agency); there are thousands of cases of people who were cheated by fraudulent timeshare salespeople.

Vacationers are approached everywhere to be invited to a free breakfast, which is actually an invitation to attend a timeshare sales presentation.

Timeshare presentations can be long-lasting and very high-pressure.

During the sales pitch, people who already own a timeshare are told that if they don’t want their old timeshare anymore, they could easily rent it or sell it.

To support this affirmation, most resorts work together with some timeshare resale companies, and Platinum Resort Services is one of them.

Platinum Resort Services

Platinum Resort Services is a timeshare rental and resale company.

They claim to have over 50 years of experience in the timeshare industry and to have a supreme knowledge of global markets and vacation ownership resorts.

Even though they assure that they have many years of experience, their website was registered in March 2011.

The company has a B- on BBB rating; however, there is an alert on the business.

Based on the BBB’s investigations, there are reasons to believe that Platinum Resort Services operates from an offshore location.

According to their website, their offices are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They offer resale and rental services.

As not everyone is interested in buying a timeshare, the majority of their clients are impulsive buyers and timeshare owners who are satisfied with their membership.

Companies they work with:

Puerto Bahia Villas & Spa
Playa Grande Resort

Marival Resort and Suites
Paradise Village
Westin
Sheraton

Complaints About the Company

Most timeshare resale companies ask for an upfront fee to sell your timeshare, and Platinum Resort Services is no an exception.

They charge an initial fee of $900 USD, but they do not guarantee that your timeshare will be sold.

Some Platinum Resort Services consumers have reported that the company does not respect the terms of the established contract and that they do not receive the payments promised or that such payments are delayed.

Being that their old timeshare was never sold, most timeshare owners who have used the services of this company end up owning two shared properties, which means they have to pay more timeshare maintenance fees.

Tips to Avoid Being Scammed:

  •  It is very important that you know your timeshare cancellation rights before purchasing a timeshare in Mexico.
  • We highly recommend that if you don’t have the intention to buy a timeshare, you do not attend timeshare presentations since they can be very streesful.
  •  Never pay an upfront fee in an effort to get rid of your timeshare.
  • During the presentation, ask as many questions as possible.
  • Do not provide your credit card information.

People should be very cautious about anything that sounds too good to be true. Timeshare salespeople can make lots of beautiful promises without confirmed written documentation; do not believe everything you hear from them.

Scalpers seek owners timeshare properties through public records or lists that buy and sell the builders of this type of property, and then communicate with them by phone or mail. If the owner expressed interest in selling, and many do so because they do not regularly use the unit, they can not afford the rising costs of maintenance or simply need the money from the sale, scammers claim to have a customer. You may submit false documents to make it appear that the possible negotiation is legitimate and sometimes have a partner that is passed by the buyer, who insists that the transaction is fast.

So from what I understand a timeshare requires you to pay a certain amount yearly for a week or so at a location you love.
Assuming you have the time available for vacation every year, and the finances to pay the annual fee, you should be having a great time with your timeshare! Also take into account the factor that you probably love the location/place since you are paying for it, so every vacation is awesome to you.

The timeshare market is full of reputable businesses and people, but there are some crooks.

It’s probably too late now, but my husband and I purchased a timeshare at the Hacienda Encantada in 2004. We’ve never been to the resort because its been under construction. The more and more I think about it the more I don’t want anything to do with it. They took my husband and I to the place of construction for breakfast and gave us both several drinks and the more we talked with the salesperson the better the idea sounded. We were both only 19 at the time and I feel we were taken advantage of. Is there anything we can do about it now?!?

My husband and I bought a timeshare on March 12th. On March 13th we went back to the resort conference centre and spoke to the salesman we bought from. I wanted to cancel the sale because we felt there was misrepresentation of the facts. However, my husband did not help me follow through at that time. Now the 7 days of ‘cooling off’ are over and he agrees that we should have sent a registered letter and rescinded. Is there any point to sending a registered letter now?
We were 5 1/2 hours at the presentation and our daughter-in-law was waiting for us to return so all we wanted was to get out of there, a card for owners giving us discounts was misrepresented, our ‘free’ week won’t start for a year because it is week 11 which was just over for 2012. We were told we were buying a week someone else had paid part of and they had to take it back so all we had to do was pay the balance. We are retired and find medical insurance out of country (Canada) more and more expensive. Is there anything we can do.

Do not trust any verbal promisses, all is a lie. Most of these companies are a totally scam. The most important is not to pay anything upfront!

Never pay upfront fees, PERIOD! it will protect you from 99% of all Timeshare resale scams.

People who buy timeshares are rubes that have been scammed once and fall all over again for opportunists like these people.
