During timeshare presentations, people are frequently told that it is possible to travel around the world when buying a timeshare.
Although this is not always a lie, the stark truth is that doing a timeshare trade is easier said than done. In fact, there are many timeshare owners who have never been able to achieve a timeshare exchange.
Learn more about timeshare trades and how they work.
Timeshare Trade
A timeshare trade is basically a one-time exchange for a different timeshare resort.
As with Real Estate; location is the key when it comes to timeshares, especially if you want to exchange your property without difficulties.
To do so, you need to own well-known timeshare companies, which must be located in a destiny that has a high year-round global demand, such as Cancun or Los Cabos.
Heads-up:
Lots of families buy timeshares with the expectation of traveling all over the world.
Unfortunately, a timeshare trade requires plenty of research into every possible exchange location before getting one done.
This process can be extremely difficult, and people give up on it.
Timeshare Exchange Companies
Timeshare Exchange Companies are Associations that specialize in doing timeshare trades.
These companies allow you to exchange your fractional ownership with other timeshare owners. The cost of being a member of a timeshare exchange company is about $100 per year.
A large network of resorts is affiliated with them, and one very important thing to find out before buying a timeshare, is if the resort is affiliated with an exchange company, and which one it is.
These companies offer unique benefits and services.
The two largest timeshare exchange companies are:
- RCI (Resort Condominiums International): This is the world's largest timeshare exchange company. It has over three million members around the world and close to 4000 affiliated resorts. It was founded in 1974.
- II (Interval International): It was founded in 1976, and is the second-largest timeshare exchange company in the world. It has around two million members, and over 2,500 resorts are affiliated with it
Types of Timeshare Trade
A timeshare trade can be done in different ways; these are the three ways to exchange your timeshare ownership:
- Direct exchange: This is the most basic way to do a timeshare exchange. A direct exchange is when you swap your property owner for another owner.
To do a direct exchange, you need to find someone who is willing to swap his week for yours. You can list your timeshare for exchange on several websites, such as RedWeek and TUGBBS.
- Exchange through the Resort: There are many timeshare resorts that have an exchange program, but most of them allow this only with their specific group of hotels, and they will probably charge a trading fee to do so.
- Exchange through a timeshare exchange company: To do an exchange through a timeshare exchange company, the resort must be affiliated with one of them, and you also need to pay for the membership fee.
This is probably the easiest way to do a trade, as these timeshare trade companies allow you to announce your week with them, and you can also choose from their inventory of weeks that other timeshare owners have listed.
Something to be aware of is that a timeshare trade costs money and time. Trading fees and membership fees are always involved, plus you’ll have to start the process a year earlier.

Timeshare scams: 8 common lies told at the sales presentation
actually just people want to invest on a timeshare , to have a place to go and have a relaxing time, exist many ways to relax, and for a cheaper price, , is very sad that nowdays exist people that only want to hook you up and pay for something that is a fraud, the only thing that can i say is that never i will going to buy a timeshare, i saw how that works , no tnx
Hi There, they offered me this option , but the tru is that never happens, once i tried to change to another place , at first they told me thats is ok but the proccedure to do that take like 4 months..so for me that answer was very out of term, i mean , the contract say another thing, and when i went to the timeshare presentatio told me that only take like 1 week to change , all was a lie, such a shame.
I too have a problem with timeshares. I purchased mine 25 years ago when it was great for vacationing. You could swap it for a fee of course. Now, it's not good enough to exchange somewhere else without throwing in additional weeks so you will have more points, of course it has to be all inclusive and so far I have had no luck exchanging it at all because my resort where I purchased no longer can compete with all the new resorts but you can't exchange it because your unit is not good enough or powerful enough to exchange. So, now I am stuck with it, no one wants it. I have even tried to give it away. I can't exchange it. I have lost so many weeks the past few years from not being able to exchange it. Then of course they will rent it for you, but you don't get any money for it because they say no one rented your unit. Yet, you call them and they say they have no vacancy for that week. All the rules have changed since we purchased our unit and we all should be able to get out of this nightmare without it ruining our credit rating. They are ripping people off left and right and all these wonderful people now buying in, will also see the light when it is too late. These reps will lie, cheat and steal to talk you into this stuff. I suggest we all file a class action lawsuit against these resorts and file against them at the better business bureau. Whatever it takes to get good people out of these things.
I don’t have any experience with time shares, but I do really like the idea of being able to trade the time share to visit a different place. That really opens up the traveling opportunities.
It's often helpful to be well informed of contractual terms and conditions to prevent being caught in a financial bind.
it's an amazing oportunity, i have travelled twice with this system :D
My parents have had an RCI timeshare in Florida for over 9 years and have only used it twice, its amazing as we went with them the first year, unfortunately now they want to sell it as they dont use it often enough to get there moneys worth and we have only used it twice also, but have been trying to sell it for over 4 years and have had no luck with any of the firms in Florida who sell them.
They are thinking of just walking away from it too as they cant afford to pay this years maintenance either, but are worried also as to how it will affect them..
any help please ..............
I was promise a timeshare trade in when I purchase my timeshare and it was all lies, after a few months that I was behind my payments with my previous timeshare they send me to collections and then is when I realize my timeshare fraud didnt do any type of trade in. so I was stuck with two timeshares that I didn’t want to begin with
