About 20 years ago, my aunt and uncle were on vacation and got tricked into going to one of the presentations. They held firm and refused to buy. Interestingly enough, every single person in the group with them bought and signed up. My uncle suspected that they were all paid actors in the audience, trying to gather enthusiasm and make it seem like it was a better deal. I wouldn't put it past the timeshare people to do something like that.
The problem with timeshares is that they do lose their value. I know they say you can sell anytime and that is true, but they do not ever say in so many words that they will buy it back.

Timeshares themselves can be scams. Many of the timeshares sold domestically and internationally have large fees to purchase the timeshare and then the timeshare is made almost completely unusable due to the resorts inability to honor reservations or trading value. Though this was a larger problem before the internet, there are still some international timeshares that charge a large up-front fee and then do not honor reservations or go bankrupt. Be sure to read the contract you are signing carefully so as to not get stuck in this trap. Most timeshares offer some value for the purchase price and fees, but others do not. It’s a buyer’s market out there so it’s up to the buyer to be choosy.
Maybe, for families who are used to travel a lot timeshares are good, but for families who only travel occasionally are not good. If you want to buy a timeshare is important to inquire about them, because they aren't always what they appear.
