How to get rid of a timeshare – Some reasons

The reasons why many timeshare owners are wondering how to get rid of timeshare are as varied as understandable.

There are an incalculable number of cases of people who have bought their timeshare properties under fraudulent, high-pressure sales practices.

Unfortunately, most of these people have realized they made a wrong choice after the rescission period has passed, leaving them with a big problem.

These are some of the reasons that lead an owner to look for a way of how to get rid of a timeshare legally:

  1. Annual Fees. - The first reason why lots of timeshare owners are looking to a great extent how to get rid of a timeshare are the annual fees.

They have to pay a maintenance fee every year that goes from $450 to $750 USD. Beside the maintenance fees, some resorts charge a membership fee and assessment fees.

If the owner belongs to RCI, he must pay a $99 fee and being that not enough, those fees do not stay fixed, but they keep on rising each year.

To know more about this, go to our article, How much do timeshares cost.

  2.  Resell value. - One of the biggest lies told at a timeshare presentation is that if you reach a point where you’re looking how to get rid of a timeshare, you could easily get rid of the timeshare just by selling it, and you could even make a profit of it.

A big-fat lie. The reseller value is extremely low. One only needs to look at the timeshares listed on EBay, Craiglist or Redweek to see how low the reseller value can be.

  3. The weeks. - Timeshares are not for spontaneous travelling. You are limited to using it for a certain number of weeks each year, and most of the time in low season.

If you are feeling that you need a vacation, it is easier if you book a room in a regular hotel than to try to exchange your timeshare weeks.

It is a hassle to deal with the resort, and they will very probably charge you a fee.

  4. Timeshare trades.Timeshare salespeople dazzle their potential buyers by telling them they could vacation anywhere they wanted, all over the world.

What they do not tell you is that in order to trade your timeshare location, the resort must be affiliated with the RCI, and that has an extra cost.

Also, it is not an easy process to trade your timeshare location, and that makes that lots of owners feel frustrated even for trying.

How to get rid of your timeshare – Some solutions

how get out of timeshare

It is an unquestionable fact that many timeshare owners are wondering how to get rid of a timeshare.

There are many solutions regarding timeshares, but most of them are nonviable and complicated. Some of these solutions are:

  1.  Resell the timeshare
This is almost certainly the most difficult solution. The demand for timeshare resales is nearly nonexistent. Not only will you hardly find a buyer, but if you do, you will luckily get a few bucks for it.

  2.  Renting the timeshare
Renting the timeshare is not an option either. There are lots of timeshare rental companies that claim to help you rent your timeshare weeks, but with no guarantees.

Plus, they ask for an upfront fee, and sometimes for a big commission.

  3.  Transfer the timeshare
A timeshare transfer is a complicated process where you end up paying more fees and taxes, and if the transfer is not done appropriately, you will still be responsible for the timeshare obligations.

  4.  Donate the timeshare
There isno chance a charity organization will take a timeshare. The value of timeshares is almost zero, and the organizations are not willing to pay the annual fees.

  5.  Give it back to the resort
There is no reason for the resort to take your timeshare back.

First, you have to pay the timeshare off, and you already did; they want you to keep on with the obligation of paying the maintenance fees.

  6.  Inherit the timeshare
Being completely honest, who would really want to pass along a timeshare to his loved ones? Owning a timeshare is a big responsibility, and it requires many expenses that no one wants for their loved ones.

These are some of the solutions that came across for those who are wondering how to get rid of a timeshare, but as you might have noticed, all of them are problematic.

I think the timeshare resale is the best option, of course will be quite difficult to find who wants to take over

It is nice to know that there are some that can get out of a timeshare. I recently was convinced to purchase one, feeling that I may finally be able to live in the lap of luxury. As with the others, I was on vacation and really didn’t take the time to “mindfully” think about the transaction. Needless to say, I was sucked in and paid a hold fee of $250.00. My initial deposit is not for another week, but we have already signed the deed to the timeshare. After mulling over everything, and getting a reality check, I no longer want the timeshare option. I am a single mother, and just really can’t fit the total “future” bills in my budget. I know I am past the five days to cancel and wish I knew a way out of this:( I just feel it is becoming useless. If anyone knows a way out, please help. It would much obliged.

They also promised a free week vacation and gave us a card forIit but when I tried to sign in to book the vacation, the user name and password did not work. They told us it would only take an hour to sit through the presentation and it took 5 hours of our vacation. When I asked for a drink, they made me pay for it. The least they could have done was treat me to a drink after making is sit there so long. Very unimpressed with them. Lance promised my refund a month ago and still have yet to see it.

The same thing happened to me. I cancelled my membership within the 5 day period. they promised a refund of my deposit within the week. I still have not gotten it and its been a month later. Do not sign up for a time share! They are liars and they are Steve and con artist! I guess I'm going to have to hire a lawyer!
