Timeshares are one of the best-selling products in the hospitality industry. There are thousands of units available and millions of people have bought one.
However, timeshares have hardly been criticized due to the high-pressure tactics that are used by the salespeople to sell the properties.
To improve their reputation, many timeshare companies, along with some travel agencies, have launched in the market numerous timeshare deals and vacation packages in order to attract new prospect buyers.
Timeshare Deals
Timeshares deals are cheap travel offers and vacation packages (sometimes even for free), that usually go from 2 to 5 days. What makes these deals attractive are the prices, which are way lower than the ones from the competition.
These types of promotions always pop up when looking on the internet for cheap vacations and travel discounts, but they’re not only on the internet, just turn on the television, check your mailbox and your email address, and you’ll almost certainly find more of them.
Last Minute Timeshare Deal!
You probably have heard of these sorts of timeshare promotions before. Why would a timeshare resort give you a free weekend in a wonderful destination for free, or for a very low price? The answer is simple: because there will be some strings attached.
That means that you will have to sit through one of their timeshare presentations, and their main goal is to get you to buy a timeshare ownership.
These cheap vacations and free weekends aren’t always a bad deal, but before going to one of them, we suggest you to follow the following tips:
- Trust your gut. If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Do not get too comfortable. The timeshare salespeople may be very nice and friendly, but remember that they’re just doing their job, and their job is to get you to sign a timeshare contract.
- Do an internet research on the company before embarking on the promotion, search for complaints and cases of fraud. Remember, Google is your friend.
- Do not accept any alcoholic beverages during the presentation. You need to listen to the sales pitch with seriousness.
- Ask for everything in writing. The promises might sound very tempting, but are they for real?
Five Signs that Spell S-C-AM
Timeshare deals are not always legit. These are some signs that spell scam on a promotion:
- “Fees in advance”: Lots of companies claim they will give you a free vacation… after you give them an upfront fee. Most of these companies disappear once you send them the money.
- “Special offer”: Most times, the word “offer” means that many extra fees will be charged
- “Subject to availability”: Surprise! There is no availability at any of the hotels that you want to stay at, and there are many other restrictions in order to get the deal done.
- “Popular hotel”: They claim you will get to stay at a “popular hotel,” but they do not reveal the name of the company
- “You have won a free vacation”: Did you actually enter a contest? Almost 100% of these notifications are scams, since most of them do not include any information about the companies behind the deal.
Gee, I Got Caught!
There is nothing to be embarrassed about when you become a victim of these sorts of timeshare scams.
Many people have fallen for these timeshare deals, but the good news is that there’s a way out in case you end up buying a timeshare.
However, it is still very important to do some internet research on the company before making any kind of deal with it.

Timeshare vacation packages: Another advertising hook used by the timeshare companies
I agree, they are used to playing with illusions of people, and sell anything to them.. what scam
is very clear that they always manage sales for misleading customers
it's so sad that always the words mean something completely different, they are miserable
My husband and I bought our week in 1986 at what is now part of the Mayan Palace resorts. We purchased a red week, 1 bedroom, for $3,000. We spent most of that first vacation feeling sick and unsure about what we had done, but we stayed with it. For many years we vacationed every other year depositing our unused week with RCI. We enjoyed the exchanges we acquired for the first few years but eventually it became more difficult to find an equal exchange. We found that we had to settle for smaller, less desirable units. We now vacation every year and use only our registered week which can be used at any of the Mayan Palaces. This coming year we were given the opportunity to book directly into the new Grand Mayan in San Jose del Cabo and are looking forward to it. Cabo is one of our favorite Mexican destinations.
We have been to a few presentations over the years but have always managed to say no, mainly because of how expensive these weeks have become. I think that if a person really wants to get into timesharing they should look into purchasing a resale. Just please do some research on what you are buying. Is it Red time (prime)? Is it floating or do you have to vacation the same week every year? Is it annual or biannual? How many years are left on the contract? This last point can be important if the price looks to good to be true.
I bought a timeshare at Sunset 2 years ago. Of course what the salesperson said and promised was a lie. Two days later I personally talked with a manager and told them I wanted to cancel, gave them my book etc. Manager said ok. Found out later when I was back home in the states and I called the credit card company to find out if I received my refund they told me that it wasn’t canceled. I have been around the block many many times on this situation that it kills me to think about it. I’m stuck with a timeshare I don’t want and can’t even get a week when I wanted to make reservation. Please stay away from timeshares.
Imagine paying cash for property in a high-end gated community were you know as long as you own it you'll have to pay taxes and assoc dues on that property. Then, because of the assoc fees and taxes, when you go to sell you find out no one is willing to buy it from you, in fact no one will even take it from you for free. That is what is happening with most timeshares.
What is worse, the developers of timeshares are still out there selling them for big money knowing that once sold they become basically worthless.
What these people did is wrong but what timeshare developers are doing is wrong too.
