Shortly, a timeshare is a space to take a vacation in a resort; you are not buying a property, you only buy the right to use your week once a year, and also you have to pay timeshare maintenance fees plus an annual fee.

The problem comes when a tourist purchase in spite of not having all the information, because they are dazzled in the timeshare presentation with the false promises made by a timeshare salesperson looking for a juicy commission.

Nor we can say that timeshares are bad, but there are many things you need to take in consideration like your economic stability and if you would like to travel to the same destination every year.

Many people decide to cancel their timeshares because they cannot afford the payments or because they prefer to travel on their own, or they were victims of high pressure sales tactics.

My family was also scammed and told that we would be making a huge profit if we bought there and when we went to the sales pitch it took about 3 hours of them trying to get us to buy. We ended up buying and we canceled with in the first week.. if we had read this before we had gone it would have been a big help. The people there put up a huge sales pitch its to bad that its all a lie and they shouldn't be able to do this to people its all a scam.

I had to claim hardship and essentially beg for the timeshare resort to take it back after trying to sell for 6 years. I lost a lot of money but at least I am out from under the maintenance fees and RCI.

If it is too good to be true take a deep breath, give yourself some real time before making any financial decisions and check out your prospective new business partners. People no matter how savy they are often are very emotional when it comes to money and they may not be thinking with their brains so best give yourself a lot of distance, if it is a good deal there will be no pressure for you that it has to be done right now, in fact 1st sign of someone who wants to part you from your hard earned cash.

I vacationed at the Sandos Playacar last year and attended one of the time share tours, I did not purchase but I was given a vacation certificate for a free 1 week (8 days, 7 nights) for touring the hotel. The certificate says to just call 877-473-4686 or go on line at [E-mail] but it says the page does not exist. Any advise?

The base idea of a timeshare is not a scam.
What is scammy are the shady, almost-illegal, unethical, high-pressure sales tactics used by timeshare companies. Basically, if you walk in even slightly unprepared and sign anything, you will be ripped off.

I made a big mistake "buying" a timeshare at the Westin Regina in Cabo San Lucas in 2007. I made one payment, signed what appears to be one contract with what looks like the Mexican Government for a 30 year lease on the timeshare, another with an agency which has gone through different changes but is now the Raintree Vacation Club, agreeing to pay an annual maintenance fee. We never use it and have decided that we just aren't the vacation club type. I don't plan to borrow any more money in this lifetime. Can I just stop paying? They have made a ton of free money from me. Please advise.

We are in the middle of a points purchase. Before the deal closed, I notified Vidanta that I wanted to cancel because their were no properties available for over a year. I cancelled my credit card so they could not charge me.
This appears to be a fraudulent type scheme. Vidanta is selling points but there are no properties available so you cannot use your points. The points expire and you receive no value. Sounds like Fraud to me.

We were duped into buying a membership that is not usable for us, this process took many hours. We started with a family breakfast, it went through lunch and into the mid-afternoon. The salespeople at Paradise Village misrepresented the benefits of the membership and now claim that they are not responsible for their own misrepresentations.
